The presentation includes a one hour panel presentation and discussion covering the ‘Integrating Habitats Competition’ conducted by Metro (the regional government entity for the Portland metropolitan area) and concluded in February 2008. The competition involved three separate project categories (Mixed Use development on Riparian Forest site; Commercial development on Lowland Hardwood Forest site; Neighborhood Residential Infill on Remnant Woodland and Savanna site) each focusing on the integration of habitat, natural environment concerns and landscape design into new building / site development projects, with the goal of generating model ‘green’ development concepts for the different program and site conditions. The session will include an overview of the competition objectives and results, presentation of winning designs from two of the three categories, followed by open discussion of the many important issues raised by the competition.

Fellow panelists include:  Stacey Triplett, Metro;  Marilee Stander, EDAW; Phillip Lopez, Yost Grube Hall Architecture; and Scott E. Thayer, Ankrom Moisan Associated Architects

GreenWorks Principal Mike Faha was a presenter on March 13th at the annual GreenPrints Conference in Atlanta, Georgia.  Greenprints is known as the place where building science and design professionals come to learn, share and network with other professionals in a stimulating, interdisciplinary environment.

Mike's presentation was part of a panel focused on Innovative and Integrated Stormwater Management Strategies.  This session looked at alternatives to centralized detention and retention ponds that integrate stormwater management throughout the development. Other strategies such as bioretention, pervious paving, rain water capture and integrated design will be discussed. A green roofs case study in Rock Mill Park in Alpharetta, Georgia examines green roofs and other innovative strategies to manage stormwater and improve water quality.

His fellow presenters included Kerry Blind, (ECOS Environmental Design), and Linda Velazquez & Alan Wieczynski (Greenroofs.com)

Five Portland firms collaborated to win the commercial site design category in the Integrating Habitats Competition, an International Design Competition sponsored by Metro. The task was to put a home improvement store, garden center, cafe and other development -- 123,000 square feet of commercial activity and 369 parking spaces -- on a 10.7 acre site. The complication: the site had significant wetlands and riparian forest. Firms working on the design were GreenWorks PC, Bruce Rodgers Design Illustration, Ankrom Moisan Associated Architects, ESA Adolphson and SWCA Environmental Consultants.
