Mike Abbaté was responsible for design, construction drawings and specifications for this series of five viewpoints, trailheads and interpretive trails along Washington State Route 504, between Coldwater and Johnston Ridges. These sites included the Loowit Viewpoint, shown here, as well as the Hummocks Interpretive Trail, Tunnel Outlet Overlook and two trailhead sites. Safety of visitors, protection of fragile returning plant communities, and compatibility of new structures with the natural volcanic landscape were the primary design objectives. Elements including the layout of the parking areas, stone walls, elevated walkways, paving, interpretive kiosks, and railings were all designed to accomplish these objectives.
